Why should I wear a pedometer?

Wearing a pedometer is an easy way to track your steps each day. Put it on first thing in the morning and wear it until bed time. You’ll be amazed at how quickly the steps add up! Record your daily steps at www.shannonmillerlifestyle.com/walk-fit and earn rewards from our program sponsors.

Where should I wear my pedometer?

For the best results, wear your pedometer on your waist in a line straight up from the middle of your knee. Either side of the body is fine. If you’re wearing a dress, hook it on your belt or your underwear. Many pedometers work if worn on your ankle attached to your sock.

How many steps should I take?

Our goal is to take 10,000 steps per day to achieve and maintain a healthy and fit lifestyle. Get started with these easy steps:

Week 1: Get your baseline.

During week 1 put your pedometer on each morning when you wake up. Wear it throughout the day as you go about your regular routine. Take off your pedometer at bed time and log your mileage by going to www.shannonmillerlifestyle.com or write down the amount of steps taken to log at a more convenient time. Create a habit by logging your steps at the same time each day.

After one week, take the average amount of steps you walk per day, this is your baseline.

Week 2 and on:

Once you have your baseline you will begin to increase your steps each week. Each week you should add 500 steps to your average. For example, if your baseline is 2,000 steps your goal for week 2 is 2,500 steps.

There are approximately 2000 steps in a mile. This is based on an average stride length between 2-3 feet. Calculate your miles or kilometers from the number of steps in our Tools section. http://shannonmillerlifestyle.com/walk-fit/tools.php  Back to Top

What is an average stride length?

The average stride length for a woman is 2.2 feet (2.5 feet for men). You can estimate your personal stride length relative to your height

Women: height x .413 equals your stride length

Does Shannon Miller wear a pedometer?

You asked, Shannon answered!

“Absolutely! I started this program because I know how much walking has helped me. Running can be intimidating but walking I can do anytime. I started doing a lot more walking when pregnant with my son. That continued with stroller walks. After buying my first pedometer I realized I could log thousands of steps throughout the day even when I wasn’t technically exercising. A long conference call, yep, I’m walking. Other favorites are walking to the grocery store, shopping and taking the stairs.”

I get a different number of steps when I map the distance between milestones. How are these calculated?

In most cases we have taken the “scenic route” in order to add steps to your walk. We encourage you to get out and visit these milestones when you’re in the area. However, for the most part milestones are “closer than they appear.” Enjoy the milestones and keep adding those steps to receive your rewards and incentives! Back to Top

Why are there fewer sponsors on my page but my friend in a different city has a ton of sponsors?

Companies can opt to sponsor the program or a trail in their city or region. If you do not live in one of these cities we may reach you soon. We continue to add cities as the program builds. In addition, we will be adding new “National Sponsors” that are available to all those located in the United States. If you live outside the US and would like to sponsor a trail or program please contact Katie Barnes at walking@shannonmillerlifestyle.com. Back to Top

Why are only certain places marked on the trails?

We have highlighted interesting places along each trail to showcase buildings, monuments or special sights that we think you might find interesting. It is likely that we were unable to include all the fabulous sights available in a certain area. Back to Top

Can I send an idea for a trail?

Yes! If you have an idea for a trail please send us the idea. Our team will consider all trails and if yours is chosen you’ll receive a personally autographed poster!

Trails submissions must include:

  • Name of milestone (ie Statue of Liberty)
  • Distance: (average between milestones – this will be considered but we like to take the scenic route so an estimate is fine)
  • Information: Please include 200 words or less of information for each milestone.
  • If possible please include a photo of each milestone.
  • Include your full name, physical address, email address and phone number.

Guidelines:

  • Trails promoting businesses or products will not be considered.
  • Trails must have at least 10 milestones.
  • The more interesting the better!
